The Art of Daily Reading: A Letter to My Younger Self
Dear Younger Me,
As you navigate the labyrinth of life, let me share a secret: daily reading is your superpower. Specifically, immersing yourself in non-fiction books can transform your mind, broaden your horizons, and propel you toward greatness. Here’s how:
1. The Habit of Consistent Reading
Make reading a daily ritual. Just as you brush your teeth or sip your morning coffee, carve out time for reading. Whether it’s 10 minutes or an hour, commit to it. Over time, these small increments accumulate into a wealth of knowledge. I like to read first thing in the morning, but I also allow myself 15 minutes of reading after completing a task or item or work item as a kind of reward. As I’ve got older I tend to wake up in the morning at about 3 pm ish, so I also use this time for reading. I set my kindle on a low brightness to not disturb my wife and then read for up to an hour.
2. Curate Your Non-Fiction Library
Choose books that ignite your curiosity. Seek out topics that challenge your assumptions, pique your interest, or align with your goals. Biographies, self-help, science, history—there’s a vast universe waiting for you. I use an excellent application called calibre for both storing and organising my book collection. It’s great as it can transfer books to many different devices and can translate to practically any of the available book formats, e.g. epub, mobi, etc.
3. Learn from the Masters
Non-fiction books are like conversations with brilliant minds. Imagine sitting across from Einstein, Sagan, or Gladwell. Their insights, research, and experiences are at your fingertips. Dive into their works and absorb their wisdom. Books can almost act like mentors. Something you can turn to when you’re stuck with a problem or stuck for an idea.
4. Take Notes and Reflect
Don’t just read; engage. Keep a notebook handy. Jot down key ideas, quotes, and questions. Reflect on how these concepts apply to your life. The act of writing reinforces learning. I like to read with intent, meaning I try and really get into the book. Actively picture/imagine yourself doing what’s presented. If the book has action steps, then don’t just read, act and do!
5. Explore Diverse Perspectives
Non-fiction introduces you to different viewpoints. Read about cultures, histories, and scientific breakthroughs. Understand the world through others’ eyes. It fosters empathy and critical thinking. Diversity can be key to new ideas and innovation. Perhaps you can link two entirely separate subject areas together to create something new and beneficial to the world.
6. Practical Skills and How-Tos
Non-fiction isn’t all lofty theories. It’s also about practical skills. Want to cook a perfect omelette? There’s a book for that, although you might be better off watching a YouTube video for that one but you get my drift! Need financial advice? Dive into personal finance. Learn, apply, and then grow.
7. Biographies: Lessons from Lives Lived
Biographies reveal human struggles, triumphs, and vulnerabilities. Walk alongside great leaders, artists, and thinkers. Their stories inspire resilience and remind you that even giants had their doubts. If others have made past mistakes or successes than perhaps you can learn from them and avoid the mistakes or perhaps achieve the successes quicker.
8. Science and Nature
Explore the cosmos, delve into quantum physics, or marvel at the intricacies of a leaf. Non-fiction can unveil the wonders of our universe.
9. History: Our Collective Memory
History isn’t just dates and battles. It’s the tapestry of humanity. Understand where we’ve been to navigate where we’re going. Learn from past mistakes and victories.
10. Apply What You Learn
Reading without action is like a ship without sails. Apply the knowledge you gain. Whether it’s improving your communication skills, investing wisely, or understanding climate change, let it shape your choices.
In summary, dear younger self, non-fiction books are your compass. They’ll guide you through storms, illuminate dark corners, and lead you toward growth. So, pick up that book, sip your tea or coffee, and let the pages transform you.
With anticipation,
Your Older Self 📚
