The Power of Breath: Advice to My Younger Self
Dear Younger Me,
So, a friend of mine, who has had back problems since he was a young adult, called me and told me that he now follows the Wim Hof technique and that it’s easing the pain in his back. I was intrigued and therefore got hold of a copy of Wim’s book. Wim who is also known as the ice man for his somewhat crazy feats in cold and ice follows three pillars, cold, breathing and mindset.
The book is quite fascinating so I started doing daily cold showers, which get easier the more you do them and I also started following his breathing technique.
Breathing as per Wim’s guidance…
Led me to also taking Yoga up which has even more healthy breathing techniques that you can practice.
As a result I would now advise my younger self on the importance of daily breathwork!
So here goes…
As you embark on life’s journey, remember that the simple act of breathing holds immense power. Whether you’re feeling stressed, seeking focus, or aiming for better health, harnessing your breath can transform your well-being. Here’s my advice on incorporating daily breathing exercises:
1. The 4-7-8 Breath
This calming technique is perfect for beginners. It’s inconspicuous, making it ideal for public settings or stressful moments. Here’s how to do it:
- Sit or stand with a straight back.
- Inhale through your nose for a count of four.
- Hold your breath for seven counts.
- Exhale through your mouth for eight counts.
- Repeat this cycle four to five times, no more than twice a day.
2. Lion’s Breath
Need an energy boost or want to release pent-up stress? Lion’s breath is your go-to:
- Exhale completely, emptying your lungs.
- Inhale deeply through your nose.
- Tilt your head back slightly and open your mouth wide.
- Stick out your tongue and exhale loudly, like a lion’s roar.
This exercise strengthens neck and face muscles while invigorating your entire system.
3. Pranayama Techniques
Pranayama, or breath control, is a yogic treasure. Explore these techniques:
- Alternate Nostril Breathing: Balance energy channels by inhaling through one nostril, exhaling through the other.
- Breath of Fire: Rapid, rhythmic breaths to boost vitality and clear the mind.
- Ujjayi Breath: Create a soothing ocean-like sound during both inhalation and exhalation.
Pranayama connects mind, body, and emotions, enhancing focus and overall well-being.
4. Wim Hof Breathing
Wim Hof’s method combines specific patterns with breath retention. It oxygenates your body, alkalizes blood, and activates the sympathetic nervous system. Try this:
- Inhale deeply through your nose.
- Exhale fully.
- Hold your breath for as long as comfortable.
- Repeat several cycles.
Wim Hof’s technique boosts energy, strengthens immunity, and empowers you to control your autonomic nervous system.
Remember, Younger Me, the breath is your constant companion. Use it intentionally, and watch your life transform.
With mindful breaths,
Your Older, Wiser Self 🌬️
There’s more to the Wim Hof method than just breathing though, in total it is based on three powerful pillars:
- Breathing: As already mentioned, this pillar involves a specialized breathing technique that can lead to more energy, reduced stress levels, and an augmented immune response
- Cold Therapy: Exposure to the cold is used to trigger a cascade of health benefits, including fat loss, reduced inflammation, improved sleep quality, and the production of endorphins. In fact, I am a big advocate of cold therapy and often start the day with a cold shower. To practice this properly though you probably want to be taking regular ice baths!
- Commitment: The third pillar emphasizes the importance of patience and dedication in mastering the breathing and cold exposure techniques to fully harness their benefits
