I got up fine this morning, the problem was that my son didn’t get up. He’s getting very demoralized with homeschooling – it’s not working for him. I completed some of my morning routine. 

Today is day 68 post bone marrow transplant for my son. 🤞

Today’s picture is a daily candle chart for the FTSE 100 as today I am mostly going to be buying some new shares for my portfolio. Although I doubt I will be buying the FTSE 100 as it currently looks to be on a bit of a high and I can’t see it lasting.

Not sure yet, but I’m definitely going back to a keto or carnivore diet as I’m getting a little porky from all the carbs I’ve been stuffing down my face!

Keynotes from the book today were:
 
That when you start promoting your SaaS product you should start using Google Tag Manager + Google Analytics. Something new for me there as I have heard of and currently use Google Analytics, but I’ve never even heard of Google tag manager.
 
It also suggests using Google Search Console, which I also currently use, and Hotjar which I’ve heard of before, something to do with website heatmaps, although I’ve never actually used it before. 
 
I just signed up to Hotjar and added the installation code required to start monitoring my PlanIt-BookIt website.
 
The book mentioned a number of sites that keep audiences updated on new technology. Two that I already use Product Hunt and Reddit and a new one that I have just signed up for called BetaList.
 
It says that BetaList is great for SaaS companies and is good for getting initial feedback from users and a possibility of getting your first sign-up from using it. Useful for early-stage Saas

Got up late and hardly completed any of my morning routine.

Today is day 66 post bone marrow transplant for my son. 🤞

Today’s picture is of some excellent ribs I had on my ski holiday the other week.

Today has been a bit of a right off as we had a load of beers with friends last night. Was a great night though.

Yesterday I took my son to our squash club for his first attempt at playing squash in probably over 6 months now. He lasted just less than 10 minutes before becoming too tied but he could still play quite well.

When writing a blog, identify the pain points of your readers, collect keywords and create a content plan, then write the content and add useful, relevant links.
 
Do not write sales messages.
 
Identify clear use cases for your product. This should stem from your customer profiles. Come up with 5 or more use cases for your product and create articles for these directions. What does the product do? What does it not do? The content needs to give value to the reader.
 
Keep some metrics – organic traffic growth, google position changes, sign-ups, lead magnet downloads, and comments.
 
Subscription forms need to be simple and not put the user off.
 
Ensure your blog posts fulfill their stated purpose.
 
Separate or highlight the most important information.

Got up at a kind of normal time for me, around 8:30 am, and completed my morning routine.

Today is day 64 post bone marrow transplant for my son, and he’s doing well with everything except homeschooling. 🤞

Today’s picture is of a special fried rice I made, it was rather nice too!

We did a big shop at Aldi, over £100! Bad news: if shopping bills at Aldi are going beyond £100, it’s the cheapest supermarket in the UK.

I played my friend Paul at Racketball in the evening, was a great game, I, unfortunately, lost 13 to 11 in the 5th game. I will beat him next week! I think the holiday all-inclusive bar has taken a toll on my fitness.

After two nights of abstaining from alcohol, I failed tonight and had a beer in the bar and a few more back at home.

A blog article should have an introduction, a plot, and a conclusion Think about the user. Take the most competitive, engaging content then reword and add one or two different points. Blog articles should not sell. Include stats, expert quotes, and case studies. Don’t speak negatively about competitors. Use screenshots and tables to make things clearer. Keep your writing style consistent. Support potentially controversial statements with links to authoritative sources.
 
Use short sentences and paragraphs as they are easier to read on a website. Keep paragraphs to only two sentences. Avoid passive voice and adjectives. Overall keep it simple, and avoid complexity.

What is emotional intelligence in leadership?

Emotional intelligence in leadership, which is often shortened to just EI is the ability a leader has to be able to recognize, understand and manage both the emotions of others and their own emotions.

It’s about guiding your thoughts and actions based on the emotions of others to make effective decisions.

Leaders who are emotionally intelligent are often strong communicators that can build productive, effective working relationships. They can often handle stress and pressure and create positive work environments.

EI leaders are able to manage conflicts and tend to be effective negotiators. Emotional Intelligence in leadership is bout empathizing with the people that you lead. It is thought to be a crucial component of effective leadership as it enables team members to feel valued and assists them in reaching their full potential

Why is emotional intelligence important in leadership?

There are a number of reasons why emotional intelligence in leadership is important…

  1. It helps you manage and control your own emotions which can help you stay cool and calm in stressful or pressured situations, giving you more chances of making responsible, thoughtful, fact-based, and level-headed decisions.
  2. It fosters good, strong working relationships through understanding and empathizing with those that the person leads and other key stakeholders that a leader deals with in a typical working environment. Thus ultimately should lead to a productive working environment.
  3. Emotionally intelligent leaders can often inspire trust and respect in those that they lead. This in turn will often increase employee engagement and motivation.

How can emotional intelligence improve leadership?

Leadership is ultimately about getting things done by a team of people. To do this requires the leader to understand and motivate the people they are responsible for. Emotional intelligence helps leaders better understand and motivate people – it’s about reading the signs of an individual. What makes them tick? What do they like or dislike, etc? What communication styles work best with a particular individual?

Having emotional intelligence as a leader can prevent you from taking actions or making decisions that could damage team morale or create a conflict in the workplace.

What are the 5 essential tools for an emotionally intelligent leader?

There are said to be 5 essential tools for an emotionally intelligent leader, these are:

  • empathy
  • self-awareness
  • emotional regulation
  • social skills
  • and motivation.

Empathy

Allows a leader to put themselves in another person’s shoes so to speak. To see things from their perspective. This often results in the building of stronger working relationships, making better decisions, and creating a more positive work environment

Self Awareness

This is about the leader being aware of their own emotions in the main but also having a strong awareness of the emotions of others. Being able to manage and understand such emotions is conducive to an effective, productive, and positive work environment.

Emotional Regulation

Enable the leader to stay in control of their emotions. Regulating one’s emotions enables you to better make decisions with the best interests of your team or organization at heart. It’s also important for keeping conflict at bay.

Social Skills

Social skills are all about interacting with others effectively. Emotional intelligence is the ability to be aware and understand emotions, and to use this information to guide your thoughts and actions. Strong social skills are a complement to emotional intelligence.

Motivation

Motivation allows the leader to influence and inspire others. Emotionally intelligent leaders are able to read key emotions from individuals to better enable them to best understand what motivates those individuals most effectively.

Does leadership need emotional intelligence?

In short, yes it does! It allows leaders to better understand and relate to the people they are leading. It enables better response to difficult situations from the understanding of the emotional needs of the people you are surrounded by.

What is a good example of emotional intelligence?

I think a good example of emotional intelligence that I experienced during my time as a leader was picking up on the skills, strengths, and motivations of others. I had one individual who was highly technical, providing him with the latest bit of technological kit or software would make him happy, productive, and motivated for months. I had another individual who loved to be involved in the more strategic aspects of the business, if I invited her to the core strategy meetings she was made up and very useful in the meeting.

I personally see emotional intelligence as the ability to spot those kinds of things… What does an individual like? What do they dislike? What makes them smile? What do they like to talk about? etc. Armed with this knowledge it’s much easier to get things done at the right time and by the right people – meaning people who would be happy doing the task at hand.

Why is emotional intelligence important in the workplace?

The understanding of feelings and emotions tends to lead to more productive, efficient, and effective teams. It builds relationships, helps resolve conflicts, and creates a positive workplace and culture. It contributes to overall job satisfaction and employee engagement which ultimately leads to improved staff retention and improved performance overall.

Understanding and managing emotions in oneself and others

As was probably made clear in the previous parts of this post emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of and manage one’s own emotions, and the emotions of others. It’s an important life skill and one that can actually be improved with practice.

People who have high emotional intelligence tend to have more success in life. High EI enables people to better manage relationships, set and achieve goals and cope with more stress and adversity.

There are four key components to emotional intelligence:

1. Self-awareness: To be aware of and understand one’s own emotions.

2. Self-management: To manage one’s emotions and reactions in a healthy way.

3. Social awareness: To be aware of and understand the emotions of others.

4. Relationship management: To manage relationships effectively and take into account the emotions of others.

People with high EI are usually good at managing their own emotions and the emotions of others

Building and maintaining positive relationships

To effectively communicate with others a leader must build and maintain positive relationships. To do this they need to be able to understand the emotions of others and respond in a way that meets those needs. It’s about making people feel comfortable and respected.

Active listening and effective communication

Active listening is a key communication skill for leaders. Leaders need to be able to listen to their team and understand individual needs and concerns, which requires empathy and emotional intelligence. Active listening is a communication skill that is used to improve communication by concentrating on the speaker and what they are saying. It’s about making the speaker feel heard and valued, and responding thoughtfully.

Whereas effective communication is a process of exchanging information in a way that the message is accurately understood and acted upon. It involves understanding the needs of the person or people that you are communicating with and clearly conveying your message to them. It’s about ensuring that the message was received and properly understood.

Conflict resolution and negotiation skills

Having the ability to effectively manage conflict and negotiate solutions is a key competence for emotionally intelligent leaders. It’s about spotting emotions early and creating win-win solutions that satisfy the needs of all parties involved while building an environment of trust and respect. Making employees feel heard and valued.

Empathy and understanding different perspectives

Empathy is key to emotional intelligence as it involves understanding how others are feeling and being able to see the situation from their perspective. It can enable you to better understand exactly where your team members are coming from, and what point they’re trying to put across or what they’re dealing with. Understanding team needs and wants can be a powerful strategy for motivating them to get stuff done.

Self-awareness and self-regulation

Self-awareness is always the first step toward emotional intelligence. To be able to be aware of others’ emotions you must first be fully aware and able to regulate your own emotions. You need to be aware of things that trigger your emotions and be able to control your reactions even when in difficult or stressful situations. It’s about staying calm, keeping clear-headed, and focused, all of the aforementioned are essential for making good decisions.

Developing emotional intelligence in team members

To develop emotional intelligence in team members, leaders should:

  1. Encourage team members to have an understanding of their own emotions and what triggers them
  2. Encourage team members to be aware of and express their emotions and provide strategies or tools to help manage their emotions.
  3. Teach team members how to read and understand others’ emotions.
  4. Encourage team members to be supportive of one another, particularly in an emotional context.
  5. Help team members to resolve conflict in a constructive and positive way.

Got up very early for me today and completed the bulk of my morning routine.

I’ve missed quite a few days I know! I went on a skiing trip to Sallbach in Austria, only to find that my knees are so weak from years of playing squash and some surgery that I can no longer ski!! Oh well, it wasn’t too bad as the hotel Die Sonne where I stayed was off-the-chart excellent. It had a full all-inclusive bar and lots of spa facilities.

Today is day 63 post bone marrow transplant for my son, and his blood numbers are still increasing! 🤞.

  •  The pricing page should be friendly and easy to use as the visitor is almost ready to buy if she gets to this point. It should include attributes of trust. Add awards or logos of other companies that use your software. Update the information as the company grows.
  • On the sign-up page list the benefits one more time or alternatively have nothing but the sign-up process, really you should test to see which works best.
  • A user interacts with your brand approx 15 times before he signs up – this is why you need decent content marketing. Educate visitors and gradually gain their trust. A blog is about establishing a long-term relationship with your customers.

Got up too early as was my job to get our teenage son out of bed. He is incapable of getting himself up!  Then completed my morning routine.

Today is day 50 post bone marrow transplant for my son, and all is still good! 🤞.

Today’s picture is of an ambi rad heaters control unit. Fascinating eh! 😂 We’re looking to be able to trigger this from a smart switch via our booking software. That way we will be able to turn heaters on to warm squash courts just before a person starts their match.

My customer who asked me to do changes to her website yesterday asked me to roll the changes back today as her boss wasn’t happy that things had been removed. I thought it might be a difficult thing to get back, but luckily all went well.

Decide which topics competitors have written about that you also want to add to your site. Pay attention to low-volume keywords because if you get enough of them where you rank quite high it can still drive a lot of traffic to your site.
 
Your spreadsheet should include the target keyword, search volume, keyword difficulty, and landing page for the keyword.
 
Landing pages
  • should start with your companies logo
  • Then have a header describing precisely what your Saas does in 4 to 6 words and can include your positioning advantage
  • Subheader to strengthen the pain of the visitor
  • Conversion step, either a button or a form that will gather clients that want to access the product right away. The button or form should stand out.
  • Include visuals or videos
  • The first screen needs to grab their attention.
  • You need to offer them something to keep their focus. For us, this could be the free mini-league system that we created.
  • It needs a compelling call to action – write them in the first person. “Get my copy” or “Start my campaign”

Ok, I’m probably cheating a little by calling this a daily journal as I have missed the last few days. I decided to have a bit of an easy, lazy weekend. Got up around 8:30 am, slept just Ok, and then completed my morning routine.

Today is day 49 post bone marrow transplant for my son, and all is still good! 🤞.

Today, I met with a customer regarding some changes that they want to their website, and then I also sold quite a few shares, I need to purchase some new ones soon!

Today’s picture is of me in the new ski outfit that I ordered on Vinted, I’m quite pleased with it too!

In the evening I played a friend of mine at racketball, I’m usually pretty close to him but last night he destroyed me!

Bit of info on using expensive SEO tools like SEMRush or Ahrefs, but there’s no way that I’m forking out £100 a month to sue such an app.
 
Adding the word “online” to keywords can be useful if some of your competitors offer stand-alone solutions instead of the web (I personally can’t imagine there being many of these anymore).
 
As you are analyzing competitor websites notice if they offer features that you don’t offer and should be. 
 
Also, check out the keywords of the features that your software adds. Your goal is to find keywords that will bring visitors. You need to add to your spreadsheet where the keyword should lead to:
  1. Additional text for your home page
  2. Or a blog article

Note who is number one at the moment.

Maybe make your keywords more specific as more likely to be able to target them.

Add all worthy keywords to a spreadsheet.

Today, I’ve not really been doing what I should be doing! Naughty me!! I’ve been working on building an old-fashioned space invaders game in c#. So the picture today is the space invader sprite that I got the AI bot to draw for me.

Importance of specifying the correct page language that you are serving. The importance of Google PageSpeed being 80+
 
Keyword Research
Identify 3 to 5 competitors – they don’t have to offer identical solutions
Divide into subcategories
Large competitors – lots of landing pages and history
Direct competitors – similar products e.g. a squash court booking system
Not a similar business model but still match Google for the queries you want to rank for.
What keywords are they ranking for? Note the look and structure of the page or site and the type of content that works best

Got up around 8:30 am, after a great night’s sleep, I was awake once, but managed to get back to sleep. I completed my morning routine. 

Today is day 43 post bone marrow transplant for my son, and all is still good! 🤞.

I’m having problems with my online banking so today’s picture is the device they require you to use when transferring money. I ended up having to call them and a very nice lady kindly explained that the advice they gave me the last time I called was a load of rubbish!

Don’t cheat Google, although I already knew that.
 
Make the website appealing and provide the necessary information to satisfy the search intent. This is key in my opinion to all SEO! How will it satisfy customer needs, how will it help them?
 
Doing SEO well should provide you with free visitors from Google.
 
Screaming Frog is great for analyzing a website for free with 500 pages or less and strangely enough, I downloaded this and had a quick play with this software only yesterday!
 
Strive to only have 200 response codes on your website.

Well, after a short break for Christmas and New Year, I’m back with my daily journal entries. I got up very late this morning as I spent most of the evening arguing with my teenage son trying to get him to go to bed. When I eventually got up I completed my morning routine. 

Today is day 42 post bone marrow transplant for my son, and we found out yesterday that his blood numbers had increased even further! 🤞.

I installed the screaming frog software and had a little play with it.

I also signed up for the Asana project management software and had a really quick play with that too.
